The cinema world mourns the loss of Tonie Marshall. The Franco-American director, the only woman to have won the César for best achievement for Venus Beauty (Institute) in 2000, died Thursday at the age of 68, of a long illness, announced her agent Elisabeth Tanner this Thursday.

Cannes Film Festival president Pierre Lescure paid tribute to the filmmaker on Twitter. “Tonie has struggled and Tonie has just left. In life, as in her films, she often moved us, made us smile beautifully, she always seduced us. Tonie was strong and attentive, committed and delicate. To her mother, her husband, her loved ones, all our friendship. To you, Tonie, for ever, ”he wrote.

How sad! Disappearance of Tonie MARSHALL alone to have won the Cesar for best Director (for Venus Beauty). She was lively, laughing, warm, crazy about cinema and life. A beautiful and good person. All my affection for Micheline Presle, her mother.

Sadness at the announcement of the death of talented, generous #TonieMarshall, the only woman to have received a César for the best achievement with Venus Beauty Institute. Very great sadness. Parisian all her life, the first woman to receive the César for best achievement, Tonie Marshall leaves us by bequeathing us an intimate, caustic feminism, and more relevant than ever. https://t.co/j5lRbSfOHX
