The Corona virus continues to spread throughout the world, and it has no known treatment yet. Unfortunately, this did not limit the spread of tips and advice, some of which are relatively harmless and others that pose a health hazard.
Many messages spread through Facebook recommending eating garlic to prevent infection with Corona virus.
But the World Health Organization says that although garlic is a healthy food and may help counteract microbes, there is no evidence that eating garlic may protect against infection with the emerging coronavirus.
However, according to BBC Arabic, these tips may sometimes be harmful. The South China Morning Post, for example, reported the story of a woman who had to be hospitalized for having severe sore throat after eating 1.5 kilograms of garlic.
YouTube star Jordan Sather, who has thousands of followers on various social media platforms, claims that chlorine dioxide, a bleaching agent used in detergents, bleaching fabrics and stains, helps to get rid of the Corona virus.
And the US Food and Drug Administration last year warned of the health risks of drinking chlorine dioxide. "Chlorine dioxide products can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and symptoms of severe dehydration," she said. Health authorities in other countries have issued alerts on this topic.
Some encourage the use of what is known as colloidal silver, which is small particles of silver in a liquid, to counter the Corona virus. However, there are clear recommendations from the US health authorities that there is no evidence that this method is effective with any health condition. More importantly, this silver can cause serious side effects, including kidney damage, epileptic seizures, and vascular problems.
