Acting colleague Eddie Axberg played with von Sydow in the films The Emigrants and the New Builders. He remembers the time with great joy.

- He was a very friendly person who was very generous in sharing his knowledge. He was as easy to socialize with amateurs as with professionals. It's just a lament, a passing away of a great actor simply, Axberg tells the Culture News.

Withdrew

Max von Sydow went from being known as open and welcoming to the public to retiring from the late 1990s. In 2002 he became a French citizen, and after that he did very few interviews with Swedish newspapers.

- I asked him for a job, it's probably 25-30 years ago, but he refused no. That is the last contact I had with him, ”says Eddie Axberg.

Max von Sydow also created headlines by not attending Ingmar Bergman's funeral, and friends like Liv Ullmann testified that they no longer knew how to contact him.

Cult-stamped films

Actor Inga Landgré played against him in The Seventh Seal and has strong memories of Max von Sydow.

- I have a very personal memory of him. We sat on the bus waiting for the next take. He sat behind me and I leaned my back against his legs. We didn't talk about it but there was a sense of security in his radiance and I enjoyed sitting there.

"His presence was his strength," she says.

The film producer and production manager Katinka Faragó, who first became known as Ingmar Bergman's script, remembers Max von Sydow with great warmth.

- He could do anything and everything he did was good. I remember when he did a revival with Povel Ramel, it wasn't wise how funny he was. We already worked together in the 1950s with Ingrid Thulin's Face. I think of him every day because I got a wonderful cutting board from him when we had done the expatriates, so every time I hack something I think of Max. This feels really sad, he was so special and talented, very talented.

One of Sweden's largest

In 1989 and 2012 he was nominated for an Oscar for his roles in Pelle the Conqueror and in Extremely High and Incredibly Close, and as late as last fall he was honored for his life's work at the Stockholm Film Festival. In total there would be over 150 roles in films and TV series.

- Max von Sydow was one of the biggest Swedish television, film and theater companies. He had a unique range of roles and expressions, from the Seventh Seal to Star Wars. Dignified, heartfelt and present, not least as Karl Oskar in the Emigrants. That such a timeless person can go out of time, says Hanna Stjärne, CEO of SVT.
