It was when Bo Nilsson, museum director at the Artipelag Art Hall in Stockholm, was commissioned by a Norwegian art museum to come up with proposals for the purchase of Swedish artists that he was reminded of the large overweight of male artists that appeared in most exhibitions.

But the exhibition Signature Women - 100 years on the Swedish art scene, Artipelag now hopes to inspire a discussion about the historical distortion.

From Hilma af Klint to Carolina Falkholt

About fifty artists participate in the exhibition, ranging from the abstract painting of modernism to the modern expression of the last decades, from Hilma af Klint to Carolina Falkholt.

The exhibition consists of a subjective selection made by four commissioners. The starting point has been how the different artists reflect the society in which they operate.

"Don't believe in groupings"

The glass artist Åsa Jungnelius is one of the participants in the exhibition. Fun, she thought when the invitation came, but she also found it strange to exhibit with only female artists.

- I never believe in creating groupings really, but when I see the exhibition I think it's nice, says Åsa Jungnelius to the Culture News.
