Making your own hydroalcoholic gel with vodka is useless for fighting the coronavirus, warned an American manufacturer of this brandy in response to a user who had shared his homemade recipe.

"I made disinfectant gel with your vodka. The gel doesn't taste bad either. It protects me from germs and I feel good, "said Thursday the owner of Twitter account Snottypotty in a message to the official account of the brand of vodka Tito's, based in Texas.

A user named Kaliel also assured on Twitter that she would "make a disinfectant gel with Tito's vodka to stay safe from the coronavirus". Another internet user, Rick Holter, suggested having a bottle of vodka on hand to clean your hands.

Not enough alcohol

Faced with these messages, the manufacturer made a point of recalling on Twitter the recommendations of the American Centers for Disease Control (CDC). “The disinfectant gels must contain at least 60% alcohol. Tito's artisanal vodka contains 40% alcohol and therefore does not comply with these recommendations, ”says the message.

Per the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol. Tito's Handmade Vodka is 40% alcohol, and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC. Please see attached for more information. pic.twitter.com/ZYDUGH44IN

Social networks have been inundated with more or less eccentric and sometimes dangerous craft recipes since the World Health Organization (WHO) published on its website a guide to local production intended for health professionals.

In a few weeks, masks, disinfectant gels, gloves or protective suits have become rare commodities in several countries of the world affected by the Covid-19 virus.
