More than half of all plastics worldwide have been produced since 2000, and only 10% of the 9.2 billion tonnes of plastics released since the 1950s have been recycled, says report released Tuesday. .

"We have produced more plastic since 2000 than during the previous 50 years, and the phenomenon continues to increase", notes "The Plastic Atlas", compiled by the Heinrich Böll Foundation, close to the German Greens, the think tank The ecological factory and the platform

An annual production of 600 million tonnes in 2025?

In 2025, more than 600 million tonnes should be produced, against 438 million tonnes in 2017, according to the report, which also states that "about 40% of plastic products are discarded after less than a month".

Packaging, mainly for single use, represents more than a third of the plastics produced, he said. Next come the construction and public works, textiles and consumer goods sectors.

This overview is available online for all stakeholders and the general public.

Plastic recycling, "a false lead"

"It is a false lead to believe that we could solve this problem by recycling plastic when the quantities produced increase more and more," said Jens Althoff, director of the Paris office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, to the press.

"It is possible to produce and consume differently" to go "to a world without disposable plastic," he added. But "consumers cannot solve this crisis alone," he said, asking for "political action at national and European level".

Anahita Grisoni, coordinator of the study for The Ecological Factory, underlined the role of "a few multinationals, very few, (who) have an interest in continuing to consume and produce ever greater quantities of plastics" .
