According to the latest epidemiological bulletin from Public Health France, Île-de-France, Manche and Maine-et-Loire are the best-off departments while Vosges, Cher or Vaucluse are among the departments where we die the most from this disease.

30,000 people die from a stroke every year in our country, according to the latest epidemiological bulletin from Public Health France. This represents more than a quarter of those affected. But above all, according to this same study, significant geographic disparities are noted in the management of this disease. Concretely, the death rates after a stroke vary from a simple to a double from a department to another.

Vosges, Cher and Vaucluse at the bottom of the ranking

Île-de-France, Manche and Maine-et-Loire are thus the best-off departments for stroke. On the other hand, the Vosges, the Cher, the Vaucluse, the Ariège, and even the Creuse appear at the bottom of this ranking. Europe 1 has collected the testimony of Philippe, a resident of Gironde, affected by the disease six years ago.

That day, when he wakes up in the middle of the night with several parts of the body paralyzed, vomiting a lot, Philippe worries. He calls 15, who explains that he is having a stroke. He lives 40 kilometers from Bordeaux and the regulating doctor of Samu makes every effort for his survival. "It is obvious that if I had not called the 15th, if everything had not gone well in the care with this notion of ultra-rapidity, especially when we are in rurality, well ... I will not speak to you as I speak to you today, "he said.

Specialized neurovascular units

Philippe was referred to a neurovascular unit in the hospital closest to his home. Units developed since 2010 and the national stroke action plan, 140 in France, but whose territorial network is not yet homogeneous.

So if you suddenly lose your balance, are vomiting, or a part of your body is paralyzed, call 15 immediately rather than going to the emergency room. The Samu regulatory doctor will be able to direct you to the nearest neurovascular unit.
