Houston police announced the arrest of a Texas teenager who had shot her 10-year-old relative while taking photographs of a pistol, a new incident recorded in a state where the tragedies associated with the use of the weapon have spread.

"Kaitlyn Smith, a 19-year-old child's aunt, was arrested for causing severe bodily harm to a child," said Ed Gonzales, commander of Harris County police, where the accident occurred.

Caitlin was caring for her relative in North Houston last Tuesday, when she took a pistol and took pictures while carrying it in different directions as she put her finger on the trigger, according to ABC network quoting local authorities.

It was reported that she had accidentally shot and hit her relative in the stomach.

The child underwent surgery and was in a "critical" condition, while Ed Gonzales indicated that hope for a "full recovery" exists.

Caitlin Smith was arrested last Thursday in Harris County, according to local media.

In 2018, about 458 people were killed in shooting incidents in the United States.
