"I lost my body" by Jérémy Clapin - Rezo Films

  • The Caesar ceremony should prove particularly exciting this year.
  • The quality competitors are just as numerous as the controversies surrounding some of them.
  • More than ever, the results will give an overview of French cinema.

Les César is this Friday evening from 9 p.m. on clear, on Canal +. This year, the suspense is more than ever on the backdrop of controversy and resignation from the board of directors. The atmosphere is likely to be electric and the ceremony could take place in pugilat in the Salle Pleyel with the mistress of ceremony Florence Foresti and the president Sandrine Kiberlain as referees.

In the forecast game, not the simplest this year, 20 Minutes which cooked a lot of members of the Academy, would see J'accuse d e Roman Polanski (12 nominations) leave empty-handed, Les Misérables by Ladj Ly (11 nominations ) be content with the best first film and the three other favorites - La Belle Epoque by Nicolas Bedos (11 nominations), Portrait of the young girl on fire by Céline Sciamma (10 nominations) and Grâce à Dieu by François Ozon (8 nominations) - share the main part of the cake.

Best Film: “Thanks to God”

Come on, let's dare something and bet for the winning François Ozon film. Thanks be to God could indeed create surprise by bringing together the maximum number of voters. This film on pedophile scandals in the Church is not only a great moment of cinema but also an activist work. Les Misérables de Ladj Ly also has a good chance of winning, given the current social context and the wind of renewal it would blow on the Academy. Unless everyone falls back on the consensual (but successful) Hors Normes duo Eric Nakache and Olivier Toledano…

Best Director: Céline Sciamma

Come on, let's play the card of the winning director? Rewarding Céline Sciamma for the overwhelming Portrait of the girl on fire would send a strong signal, proving that voters are not sexist and that they are ready to honor a brilliant and feminist filmmaker. Giving the trophy to Roman Polanski for J'accuse would be scandalous, whatever the qualities of the film, not everyone is ready to dissociate the man from the artist. It also meant that the #Metoo movement slipped on voters without touching them.

Best Actress: Adèle Haenel

There too, giving Adèle Haenel a prize for Portrait of the young girl on fire would be a militant act marking the admiration that one can feel for the actress and the courageous woman who dared to denounce sexual violence. Voters can however decide to sulk by finding it too radical. Adèle Haenel was not just friends when she spoke. Some may prefer her partner Noémie Merlant or the wonderful Eva Green, touching mom astronaut in Proxima by Alice Winocour.

Best Actor: Roshdy Zem

Roshdy Zem as a humanist policeman clearly dominates his colleagues and therefore has every chance on his side for Roubaix, a light from Arnaud Desplechin. There, no controversy in sight: he is given a big favorite. If we whisper that Daniel Auteuil could surprise with his role as a great aging lover in La Belle Epoque. On the other hand, nobody believes in the chances of Jean Dujardin, however amazing in vindicator for J'accuse.

Best Supporting Actor: Denis Ménochet

It is a bit jostling in this category. Denis Ménochet is wonderful as the victim of a pedophile priest in Grâce à Dieu and his partner Swann Arlaud is just as much in vivid skin with childhood stolen. Voters will find it difficult to decide between them. Unless they prefer the fantasy of Benjamin Lavernhe as a best friend writhing for Mon inconnue by Hugo Gélin, a little moment of lightness is enough to seduce.

Best Supporting Actress: Fanny Ardant

Fanny Ardant hadn't been as remarkable as in La Belle Epoque for a long time . Disappointed wife and a bit of a bitch, she is as funny as touching in the face of Daniel Auteuil and should be ahead of the others. Unless Josiane Balasko, amazing as an understanding mother and activist of a child victim of pedophilia in Grace to God is distinguished. His discreet and sober performance is one of the strong points of François Ozon's film.

Best first film: "Les Misérables"

The rules are clear. To avoid a duplication like that of Boys and William at the table! , the works can no longer combine the statuettes of the best film and the best first film. If Les Misérables wins this trophy, we will know that Ladj Ly will not have the supreme award. If Les Misérables is not crowned as the first film, the statue could therefore fall to Mounia Meddour's excellent Papicha on the emancipation of women in Algiers. It is hard to imagine that Les Misérables is leaving empty-handed.

Foreign film: “Parasite”

And the winner is ... Drum roll: Parasite de Bong Joon-ho! As in Cannes, at the Oscars and almost everywhere else ... But it is not impossible that the dark family comedy will be beaten by an outsider: Pain and glory of Pedro Almodóvar. The Spanish director is very popular in France, his semi-autobiography is great and everyone knows that the French never do anything like everyone else!

Best Animated Film: "I Lost My Body"

So there, we tell you very clearly, the César will not escape Jérémy Clapin for I lost my body . It's really the shock of the French animation of the year. Grand prize in Annecy and Cannes Critics' Week, this little gem on the adventures of a severed hand and its owner is so original that it should be ahead of Les Hirondelles de Kaboul by Zabou Breitman and Eléa Gobbé-Mévellec on destiny of a couple subject to the Taliban regime.

Audience Award: "Out of the ordinary"

This year, the box office is no longer the only criterion for awarding the Audience Prize. The members of the Academy must decide between the winners by a vote. What have we done to God again? Philippe de Chauveron could see the trophy pass under his nose despite its 6.8 million admissions. We could see Hors Norms and its 2.1 million tickets sold winning. The presence of Vincent Cassel and Reda Kated in stars as his generosity in the description of an association helping autistic people give him all the assets to triumph.
