The innovations in the business class follow one another more quickly than in tourist. Hence, this initiative to make cabin flight more bearable has been welcomed with great expectation. It consists of a sleep capsule that allows the passenger to take the horizontal for at least part of the flight.

The Skynest, as Air New Zealand has named it, is the result of three years of research and the opinions of 200 passengers. The New Zealand airline has proposed incorporating it into airplanes that operate long-haul flights, starting with the Auckland - New York, lasting 17 hours and 40 minutes, which will launch next fall.

The small cabin is designed to house six sleeping capsules by way of two triple berths . Each measures 200 cm long and 58 cm wide and has a large pillow, sheets, blankets, earplugs, a privacy curtain and lighting designed for sleeping. Air New Zealand is considering including other accessories, such as USB ports and reading light.

"One of the clear inconveniences of the tourist class on long-distance flights is the inability of the passenger to stretch," said Mike Tod, director of marketing and customer service for Air New Zealand. "The development of the Skynest is a direct response to that challenge."

The capsules are not designed to replace the passenger seat. The idea is that you can reserve the bed a part of the flight and then the cabin crew clean and prepare the capsule with new bedding for the next passenger. Of course, the airline still needs to certify this initiative with regulators before travelers can lie on the berths in the middle of a flight.
