According to British composer Anthony Bolton, the story of Alexandre Litvinenko contains all the elements necessary for a lyric work: power, politics, betrayal, love and danger. By reading the biography of this former spy, he therefore decided to make it an opera.

Died on November 23, 2006, after being poisoned with polonium-210 in London, Alexandre Litvinenko was a Russian ex-spy. He fled Russia in 1999 and became an opponent of the Kremlin.
