But outside this confined area, not far from Codogno, the city of Lodi is home to the main hospital in the sector, one of the only ones still open despite the coronavirus epidemic. A hospital stormed by patients crossing roadblocks, despite containment measures.

In the parking lot of the hospital, the sirens of the ambulances never stop ringing. Inside the building, doctors in coveralls and patients with disturbing symptoms are welcomed in an airlock. Among them, Davide accompanies his elderly mother. "She has a fever, she is under surveillance and is undergoing examinations," he explains at the microphone of Europe 1. "If she really caught the virus, I know that it can end very badly".

"Cases of extreme necessity"

Overwhelmed, the emergency personnel take care of the patients, installed behind tarpaulins placed hastily. Fabio comes to deliver new respirators. "The hospital asked us for more equipment, they want to be ready." In the waiting room, Michelangelo tells of living in one of the cities placed in quarantine. He crossed the roadblocks to bring an injured friend to Lodi hospital. "I know it can be dangerous, I may be contagious, but there was no alternative," he said. "In the confined area, there is no hospital, no emergency service, we had to come here." A risk of contamination, however, was announced at the entrance of the hospital, on a poster indicating to enter only "in case of extreme necessity".
