In many parts of the globe it is carnival time. From Rio de Janeiro to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, passing through Cádiz. These are the most common destinations to live the party to the fullest. But there are many more that may surprise you. And it is not necessary to leave our borders. An example is Malaga, where there is no shortage of troupes, murgas, horseback riding, music, flower battles and a lot of tradition, since the carnival has been celebrated in style for four decades.

1. The Carnival House

From the proclamation, double this time, to the Burial of the anchovy, on Sunday, March 1, the Carnival of Malaga fills the city with color . This goes from murgas and comparsas, as in the neighboring festivities, but the culture of the carnival is lived uniquely in Malaga. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the recovery of this party, interrupted during the dictatorship . The Carnival House, opened in the Perchel area in October, centralizes part of the events, with the exhibition Milestones, 40 years of Carnival recovered and as a starting point for various parades. To enjoy everything, we chose the Barceló Málaga as the base of operations , located at the train station itself. In addition, the hotel joins the celebration with special offers and a unique party atmosphere. The best place to live it is from the rooftop B-Heaven, with 360º views of the skyline .

Carnival is lived in the streets of the city.

2. The anthem of Vanesa Martín

Each year the anthem of the Malaga Carnival is performed by a guest artist. The Hungarian or Nuria Fergó were in charge of doing so in the last editions, and this time it is Vanesa Martín, who collects the witness and presents her own version of the hymn originally created by Híspali s Singers . This is presented after the proclamation , which is run by eight illustrious carnivals and preachers of other years. Then, on the same day, the election of the gods of the carnival, the god Momo and the goddess of the carnival, who will star in different parades throughout the festivities is staged. This rite marks the beginning of the main weekend where Malaga, children and adults are called to leave their sorrows at home and have fun.

3.The Battle of the flowers

This moment is one of the most anticipated. Last Saturday, public and actors meet in Larios Street to fight in a battle of flowers and confetti. The only rule is that everything goes. Originally, the working classes threw flowers at the nobles who paraded in their floats during the Carnival. Over the centuries this tradition has evolved into one of the acts that you cannot miss. Thousands of people flock to throw kilos of petals and confetti that flood the city with color. This peculiar battle usually combines fun, healthy confrontations and especially an adrenaline rush that fits with the original spirit of the party.

4. The Festival of Joy

The recovery of the Festival of Joy, one of the novelties of the program that will take the party to the street until March 1. The traditional party that was held in the bullring of La Malagueta in the 80s and 90s with the winners of the group competition has come to life again in 2020 in the Plaza de la Libertad.

5. Burial of anchovy

This popular celebration ends on Piñata Sunday. On March 1, the people of Malaga go to the boqueroná , a tasting of fried anchovies in the Plaza de la Constitución. The Carnival ends with the Burial of the Boquerón. Faithful to the carnival tradition, a funeral procession travels through the streets of the center to go to the beach of La Malagueta, to witness the fireworks show.
