Surprise! (no) You are spending more and more time online, on average 2 hours and 12 minutes per day in 2019 according to a Médiamétrie study. According to the institute, which analyzed the behavior of some 26,000 French people representative of the population on their Internet screens (computer, tablet, smartphone), the penetration rate reached a plateau with 92% of households equipped with access to the network and 85% of French people who connect each month. But the frequency of connection is increasing, mainly due to the increasing use of smartphones. All ages combined, French people connect on average 22 days each month and 2 hours and 12 minutes per day (including 1 hour and 24 minutes on mobile).

Social networks represent 32% of surfing

The study methodology has evolved this year, making it difficult to compare with 2018, when the daily duration was one hour and 37 minutes but underestimated the frequency of connection among the youngest. Recalculated with data from social networks, the daily surfing time for 15-34 year olds reaches 3 hours and 14 minutes, 82% of which on mobile, or even exclusively on mobile for the majority of 15-24 year olds. Conversely, 10 million French people, a quarter of whom are retired and 23% of the inactive (job seekers and housewives) do not use the Internet at all.

Social War big winners, social media accounts for 32% of internet surfing time. Six out of ten French people connect to it daily, and the Médiamétrie study once again highlights the importance of the network of four brands belonging to Facebook (besides this one, Instagram, Messenger and Whatsapp), all present in the top 5 of the favorite social networks.

The only competitor at this level, the independent Snapchat application occupies second place with 14 million visitors while Tiktok, the application for sharing short videos praised by tweens and belonging to the Chinese publisher ByteDance, reached ninth place. 11-14 year olds spend 45% of their connection time, 1 hour and 14 minutes daily, on social networks and online messaging, including 58% on Snapchat, 18% on Instagram and 10% on Tiktok.

Video sites and news sites

Another big consumer of time on the Internet, online video sites. All categories combined and without counting connected televisions, Youtube (Google) dominates the debates with 46 million unique monthly visitors, followed by Netflix (16 million), Allociné (15 million) then myTF1 (14 million). The time spent on information sites also increases by 22% in one year but remains minimal compared to other uses, at 2 minutes and 8 seconds per day for all French people.

“There is still a dynamic on the press sites. The number of daily readers increased by 14% in one year to 17.4 million visitors, an increase greater than that of the total number of daily Internet users. And among these people, the time spent on the sites increased slightly by 5% to 7 minutes and 41 seconds, "specifies Bertrand Krug, director of the Internet department of Médiamétrie. Each month, 71.1% of French people and 80.6% of 15-24 year olds read online news, mainly on Figaro.fr (23 million unique visitors), Franceinfo (22 million) or BFMTV (21 million ).
