  • The Golden Ace 2020, which rewards the best game of the year, was awarded to Oriflamme, created by two brothers in their thirties.
  • Adrien Hesling is a social worker in Savoie and Axel works as an agricultural worker in the Ardèche.
  • This is their first game which has been published thanks to a first visit to Cannes in 2017.

For a first hit, it's a master stroke. This Thursday evening in Cannes, the Hesling brothers, two thirty-year-olds, won the Golden Ace, the highly coveted award of the International Games Festival for Oriflamme . And if it is an exploit, it is because it is their first creation and also because Adrien and Axel do not really have the profile. The first is a social worker in Savoy and the second works as an agricultural worker in the Ardèche.

“In our youth, we were always poked together to play. With board games, figurines, cards ... And we were already changing the rules, we were trying to create new mechanics ", explains Axel Hesling, 33. But never until you want to publish. In 2014, as life brings the two brothers geographically closer again, their idea of a game in the medieval world will change the game.

A success story born inside the Cannes festival

They first present it to their family. And the sauce takes. So they decide to go for it. Spent the following year by the Octogone show in Lyon, to start showing their baby to other people, the brothers will also stop by the Grenoble festival and will especially come to Cannes, a first time in 2017, to rubbing shoulders with "the biggest gaming event in France".

“We went to the off [a space open to everyone, where the authors can test their prototypes] and we played it to the public. It all started from there, ”says Adrien Hesling, 35.

"It's incredible that we get there"

They meet the publishing house Studio H who decides to develop Oriflamme and his universe at the crossroads of Tolkien's work and Game of thrones in a tactical and very dynamic card game. Released in France in November, it is now distributed in six other countries (Germany, England, Belgium, South Korea, Spain and Italy).

“It's incredible that we get there with a first game. From there to imagine that we can do only that, I don't believe it. Making a living by creating games is very complicated. But the desire to do more is there anyway, the two of them still together, but also me, all alone on my side, ”says Adrien Hesling.
