His favorite quote:

“When autumn came, they went to chamber gymnastics; she bored them. What did they have the tremoussoir or post chair, imagined under Louis XVI by the abbot of Saint-Pierre. How was it built, where to find information? "

Why this book?

  • Because in this anthology are gathered twenty texts speaking of sport. They are introduced by the first letter of the discipline mentioned: "A as an automobile" for example. In an intelligent and subtle way, the author places each passage quoted in the context of an era, a book, a writer. After that, when we read the "chosen piece", we don't understand it in the same way, we "savor" it differently because the introduction made our mouth water, in a way.
  • Because we realize that the great "classic" authors could show derision, humor, that their culture was complete, that they could talk about everything and that even, years, even centuries later, they are still able to bring something new to those who have read them and who mistakenly thought they knew everything about their writings (even if we have already leafed through the book where the text comes from, there is a good chance so that we do not remember it precisely and that we are in complete ignorance of the details which constitute it).

The essential in 2 minutes

The plot. These are not intrigues but facts of life that make you smile, reflect and on which we ask another look.

Characters. These are those found in the extracts chosen by the author from the books of great classical writers.

Places. There are many but we talk about sport so we can see a field, a swimming pool ... and many other places!

The time. 19th and 20th centuries.

The author. French poet, Nicolas Grenier is a lover of geography and Puy-en-Velay. He likes to rediscover the heritage of French literature.

This book has been read as an enchanting parenthesis, a delicacy to taste and reread ... to savor even better ...
