Chinon power station, not far from Saumur - PATRICK GELY / SIPA

They are initiating this legal action "with the aim of protecting the local populations". In a press release published on Monday, four environmental associations announced that they would file a complaint against EDF and against X for water pollution, risks caused to others and breach of the regulations of nuclear installations.

According to the association for the control of radioactivity in the West (Acro), radioactive pollution had been measured last summer by "voluntary samplers" in the Loire, near Saumur (Maine-et-Loire). The Vienne Loire Zéro Nuclear collective, the Sortir du Nuclear network, France Nature Environnement Pays de la Loire and La Savede de l'Anjou have designated nuclear power plants located on the Loire and Vienne as responsible, notably that of Chinon, located a few kilometers from Saumur.

Above authorized releases?

"A concentration of 310 becquerels per liter of tritium has been measured in Loire water," write the associations. It is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen with proven genetic toxicity. (…) This concentration, observed well downstream from the discharge points, is too high to result from the cumulative maximum authorized discharges from the five plants. This therefore suggests that one or more installations would not have respected the authorized release limit. "

The associations denounce "the failure of the nuclear industry's control system". Contacted, EDF has not yet responded to requests from 20 Minutes.
