The consumption of heroin is indeed at the origin of the accidental death of a 31-year-old sailor on April 5, 2019 on a trawler in Guilvinec (Finistère). This is the conclusion of an investigation by the sea investigation office (BEA) published in recent days.
During a routine operation consisting in lifting the sorting table loaded with langoustines, "the sailor was crushed between the table and the trawl reel located above", notes the BEA mer in his report. Despite an attempt to resuscitate the crew, the sailor had died.
Above average drug consumption among sailors
To explain that the fisherman did not stray, "the boss puts forward the hypothesis of a malaise having led to a loss of consciousness" whereas, according to forensic expertise, "the level of morphine and the detection of 6-acetylmorphine prove a very recent consumption of heroin in the three hours preceding death ”. Taking heroin, which leads in particular to a reduction in reflexes, reasoning skills and the field of vision, is also "a respiratory depressant which may have aggravated the consequences of thoracic trauma", notes the BEA.

According to the Ministry for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, "the consumption of psychoactive substances among French seafarers is higher than that observed among workers in other sectors of activity".
