  • Sierra Nevada is both the name of a mountain range in Andalusia and a ski resort within it.
  • Located about thirty kilometers from Granada, Sierre Nevada is the highest resort in Spain and the most southern in Europe.
  • On its southern slope, the mountain range is bathed by the Mediterranean.

Hit the slopes in the morning and spend the afternoon at the beach, only in Sierra Nevada will we seriously think about it. Located in the mountain range of the same name, in the south of Spain, about thirty kilometers east of Granada, this ski resort with a summit at 3,478 m above sea level is the highest in Spain . And the southernmost in Europe. An atypical location which allows him to play on, at least, two planes.

Dominating Andalusia, a region better known for its art of relaxation than for its practice of winter sports, Sierra Nevada is indeed "one of the few resorts in the world to be as close to the sea", assures Gloria Sementé , account manager at the travel agency Esquiades, specialized in ski holidays in Spain.

One hour from Granada

"You can get there in an hour's drive," says Eulalia Queralt, marketing manager at the Spanish tourist office in Paris. This exceptional setting allows you to combine beach and mountain in the same day. Even in spring. “It is quite possible, in April, to ski in Sierra Nevada because, at this altitude, there is still snow. We can then spend a few days enjoying the Mediterranean because, during this period, the climate already invites you to take a bath, ”suggests Gloria Sementé.

And it may not be worse. With just 94 km of slopes, Sierra Nevada is a Little Thumb in ski resorts. "If you only want to ski, count three days to explore every corner of the domain," advises Gloria Sementé. It is not the Deux Alpes that wants. The dimensions of the places will seem ideal for short family stays, but insufficient for those who are passionate about powder snow. Who will still have something to put under the stick, if they like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The station's arguments lie for many in its surroundings. In the heart of a national park, the massif offers great hiking possibilities among the pines. Further on, it is the city of Granada, an hour's drive away, which is one of the compulsory stopovers, culminating in a visit to the Alhambra, a 13th-century palace listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a morning full of schuss, a few hours of sunbathing in the water, this detour will also be an opportunity to taste an "olla de San Anton", pot-au-feu typical of the region, and to round off the evening with a flamenco show. Ski holidays like only Andalusia can offer.
