Winner of the Oscar for best actress in 2011 for her role in Black Swan , the actress made her opinion known about the absence of female directors from the list of nominations by wearing a black Dior cape on which she had embroidered. the name of filmmakers according to her unfairly dismissed.

These names included Lorene Scafaria ( Queens ), Lulu Wang ( Farewell ), Greta Gerwig ( Daughters of Doctor March ) and Marielle Heller ( An Extraordinary Friend ).

"I wanted to subtly highlight the women who have not been recognized for their incredible work this year," said Natalie Portman.

For her part, the Syrian Waad al-Kateab, author of the documentary For Sama on life in besieged Aleppo, also wore a dress displaying messages in Arabic, including: "We will not regret (for claiming) dignity" .

It is not the first time that women have tried to get messages across at award ceremonies. In 2018 at the Golden Globes, many actresses and directors dressed in black in solidarity with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.
