His name was Jacob and died on December 31 at the age of 28, "died of hunger and fatigue". The Rewild association, which brings together seven NGOs, published on Friday on its Facebook page the results of the autopsy performed on the black rhino at the Pont-Scorff zoo in Morbihan. Carried out on January 2 by the veterinary clinic of the seven chapels in Guidel, the examination of the animal reveals "the presence of severe oral lesions which prevented Jacob from eating properly".

The autopsy also concluded "an advanced cachexia [deep weakening of the organism, weight loss, fatigue, muscular atrophy], linked to a very significant undernutrition, with total absence of fatty reserve", reports Rewild, who acquired the zoo at the end of the year thanks to a significant fundraising.

The zoo transformed "into a rehabilitation center" for animals

The association concludes that "Jacob therefore literally died of hunger and fatigue, considered an old man before age". "He will have lived all his life in a climate unsuitable for his needs, with food unsuitable for his needs and in a state of weakness and suffering directly induced by his conditions as a captive rhino," added the association to its Facebook page.

At the beginning of the month, Rewild had already denounced the "illegal seizure" of fifty gray parrots from Gabon in this same zoo by agents from the French Office for Biodiversity. The association plans to transform the Pont-Scorff establishment into a "rehabilitation center to accommodate animals from the traffic before reintroducing them into their natural environment".
