What if to reduce meat consumption it was necessary to impose an additional tax on it? This is the idea of the NGO Tapp Coalition which wants to see this measure included in the “Green Deal” plan of the European Commission. And it wouldn't be a small tax: 25%, according to CNEWS.

Meat, especially red meat, is often in the crosshairs of environmental groups because the weight of production on the environment is very important. This requires a lot of water and emits a lot of CO2. A very significant reduction in meat consumption appears to be necessary to reduce the carbon footprint of human activities.

Aid for breeders

According to the NGO, this tax would recover billions of euros. The objective? Help breeders, especially cattle, to convert to other forms of agriculture. Jeroom Remmers, director of the Tapp Coalition, explains that "Europeans eat at least 50% more meat per day than what is recommended". With this tax, they hope to reduce the consumption of beef by 67%, poultry by 30%.
