Baby Yoda, Disney's new goose that lays the golden egg? The giant wants to capitalize on the success of the little character from the series The Mandalorian set in the universe of Star Wars , which caused a sensation on the Internet and could eventually have its own derivative series.

Unveiled last fall to support the launch of Disney's video on demand platform, dubbed Disney +, The Mandalorian has won over critics as well as Star Wars fans. The second season will air next October, Bob Iger, the world's number one entertainment boss, said Tuesday in a conference call with financial analysts.

A strong expectation around Baby Yoda

For Star Wars, "priority is on television for the next few years," he said. Bob Iger thus promised that The Mandalorian would know other developments, "including the possibility of integrating new characters" which could in turn be declined in series.

In addition to the caparisoned and masked hero who gives his name to the Disney + series, The Mandalorian also presented a tiny character with green skin, pointed ears and large tender eyes, officially called "The Child" but nicknamed "Baby Yoda" by all the spectators who immediately adopted and declined it in all tones on social networks

This character "took the world by storm", arousing "a sensational welcome," said Bob Iger. "We know there is a strong expectation for the range of Baby Yoda derivative products that will hit the market in the coming months," he added. Bob Iger also recalled that other Star Wars series were in preparation, with the return of Ewan McGregor in the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as a "prequel" to the film Rogue One .

Success beyond expectations

The streaming platform launched in November by Disney in the United States, Canada and the Netherlands now has 28.6 million paying subscribers, far beyond forecasts, assured Bob Iger.

The Walt Disney group announced that it was advancing to March 24 the launch of Disney + in France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Austria, before other European countries this summer.
