Alain Chabat in “# Jesuislà” by Eric Lartigau - Gaumont distribution

  • “# JeSuisLà” sends Alain Chabat to South Korea.
  • The actor is touching as a restaurateur who left to meet his sweetheart, whom he only knows through social networks.
  • In parallel with the film, the actor evokes for "20 Minutes" the absurd humor of Dummies which tints the program "Burger Quizz".

Alain Chabat knows how to make people laugh but not only… He delivers a brilliant demonstration of it in # Jesuislà by Eric Lartigau who had already directed it in Prête-moi ta main (2006). This new bittersweet comedy offers him the role of a lonely restaurateur who leaves for South Korea on a whim to meet "for real" a pretty painter with whom he interacts on social networks.

Doona Bae, seen in particular in the Sense8 series and in Air Doll by Hirokazu Kore-eda, portrays the hero's virtual sweetheart. Blanche Gardin embodies her partner whom the man leaves in France to manage his establishment. For 20 Minutes , Alain Chabat evokes this character and returns to the Carioca who saw him triumph in Cannes for the 25 years of La Cité de la fear , on the television success of the game Burger Quizz or on his appearance in the feature film Kaamelott who will see him resume his role as Duke of Aquitaine.

What interest do you find playing comedy with other directors?

This allows you to enter other universes than mine. My character from “#JeSuisLà”, for example, is very romantic and seems close to Eric Lartigau. It seems to me that there are very personal things for him in this story. I did not delve into his privacy, but this feeling fed my game. I am not him but I can understand it.

What do you like about this man?

He's cute. He just needs to dust his head before going back to his usual life. This man's stay in a place where no one knows him brings him a breath of fresh air. Like him, I have already gone green and it has done me great good.

Does this mean that notoriety weighs on you?

Not at all. I believe that this need to flee from everyday life can happen to everyone, famous or not. The hero of the film found this loophole by sympathizing with a pretty young woman on social networks. Going to meet him on a whim proves that he still has a background of youth in him, that he can embark on an adventure.

Does social media speak to you?

I have nothing against, but I have no accounts. It would take too long since I could not consider taking this lightly. My obsessive side would force me to hire people to do something funny, original, beautiful ... But for the moment, I don't see what it could bring me. I may change my mind ...

Did dancing Carioca in Cannes bring you anything?

It was a nice gift. Gérard Darmon and I did not want the fans to believe us unable to find five minutes to please them. Difficult to do our number alone on a stage, without anything else. When the idea came to contextualize the dance by interrupting the Cannes projection of The City of Fear , I knew that we were on the right track.

Do you think the era of Dummies is far away?

It's part of me but sometimes I feel like it was a thousand years ago. It's a strange feeling. It is both so close and so far away. I have an incredible chance to have already experienced all of this and that these experiences are so much part of what I am today. However, I am neither nostalgic nor backward looking. I want to move on.

Is that why you work with people like Alexandre Astier or Blanche Gardin?

Both have in common that they are incredibly generous and talented. Blanche is a funny, brilliant woman with a huge heart, which people may not know. Alexandre Astier constantly amazes me with his writing qualities as well as his requirement. When one is directed by him, one has the impression of being dubbed by King Arthur.

Would the humor of Dummies pass today?

He always goes very well on the Burger Quizz show that I host until June. The writing is different but it's the same humor. People adhere to our nonsense as on this program in which we made believe that Gérard Darmon had been dead for ten years. The public likes to take risks, which means that you never have to censor yourself. We can laugh at everything and that's why we laugh so much.
