Former Iraqi telecommunications minister Mohammed Allawi announced on Saturday (February 1st) that he has been appointed Prime Minister by President Barham Saleh. His appointment puts an end to weeks of crisis to choose a head of government.

His predecessor, Adel Abdel Mahdi, resigned in early December under pressure from an unprecedented protest movement accusing the political class of incompetence and corruption. This movement had rejected in recent days the name of Mohammed Allawi, who is slated to be chosen to form the government.

The new Prime Minister has one month to appoint the government who will run the country until early parliamentary elections are held.
