Young Esther and old Pierrot - Esther © R. Sattouf & Allary ed. / Pierrot © W. Lupano, P. Cauuet & éd. Dargaud

  • Forget Asterix, Tintin and even Goku. Comics today have new heroes and new heroines.
  • On the occasion of the Angoulême comics festival, 20 Minutes makes the presentations.
  • Today, two heroes of Franco-Belgian comics: Esther and Pierrot, from the series "Les vieux fourneaux".

They are no longer called Asterix, Tintin, Mafalda, Clark or Goku, but Esther, Pierrot, Harley, Miles, Emma or Legoshi. If the "old" headliners of the comic strip are still there, sometimes in the top sales, new heroes and new heroines have pointed the end of their schoolbag, costume or muzzle, and bring the comic strips to life, comics and manga.
On the occasion of the Angoulême festival, 20 Minutes makes the presentations with, to finish, the young Esther and the retired Pierrot, from the series "Les vieux fourneaux".

Esther, from "Esther's Notebooks"

If there is a popular heroine, it is young Esther: in just four albums, over 500,000 copies of “Cahiers d'Esther” have been sold, a series signed by Riad Sattouf (also author of this other editorial success that is “The Arab of the future”). The comedian-director has been reporting there, since 2016 and at a volume per year, the daily life of a Parisian schoolgirl who really exists, since it is the daughter of a couple of friends! The latter confides each week to the author of the anecdotes lived. Their transcription in the form of drawn slices of life is, suddenly, breathtaking realism. That probably explains why the series seduces a very large audience, and that it was declined as an animated series ...

When she was 10 years old and entered CM1 at the start of their collaboration, the new heroine of Sattouf is now a preteen very comfortable in her sneakers - although subject to concerns specific to her age (her body changes , she is attracted to boys…). No longer a child, but not yet an adult, the miss, whom the author has promised to “follow” until he is 18, perfectly embodies the urban youth of 2020. It is also thanks to this anchoring in the contemporaneity that Esther asserts herself, from album to album, as one of the most modern comic book heroines of her generation.

Pierrot, from the series "Les vieux fourneaux"

With Antoine, Pierrot and Mimile, the grandpas are completely taking over! Written by Wilfrid Lupano and drawn by Paul Cauuet, the series "Les Vieux Fourneaux", of which the three septuagenarians have been the heroes since 2014, is one of the biggest editorial boards of recent years. It must be said that, in five albums, the trio, big grumpies with tender hearts, had the leisure to be appreciated: who would not crack in front of these childhood friends who, having spent their lives rebelling against any form of authority, continue the fight despite rheumatism and eat life to the fullest?

It must be believed that readers of French-language comic books love extremes, since the crazy adventures of this somewhat anar trio already total nearly 600,000 copies sold - an exceptional figure -, are translated into eight languages and have been the subject, in 2018, of a cinematographic adaptation. A success also announced from Those Who Remain , the first volume, which received in 2015 the public price of the Angoulême comics festival. Lupano and Cauuet, who wanted to "talk about the family, our time, society through characters who break stereotypes", won their bet.
