  • Forget Asterix, Tintin and even Goku. Comics today have new heroes and new heroines.
  • On the occasion of the Angoulême comics festival, 20 Minutes makes the presentations.
  • Today, we start with two manga heroes, Emma and Legoshi.

They are no longer called Asterix, Tintin, Mafalda, Clark or Goku, but Esther, Harley, Miles, Emma or Legoshi. If the "old" headliners of the comic strip are still there, sometimes in the top sales, new heroes and new heroines have pointed the end of their schoolbag, costume or muzzle, and bring the comic strips to life, comics and manga. On the occasion of the Angoulême festival, 20 Minutes makes the presentations with, to begin with, Emma and Legoshi, heroine and respective heroes of the manga The Promised Neverland (Kazé) and Beastars (Ki-oon).

Emma from "The Promised Neverland"

For a long time, manga heroines were mainly heroines of shôjo manga. And if they managed to find a place (secondary) in the shônen, it was most often with masculine attributes: the badass, the fight ... ah and sometimes the sexy! It was not the norm, but the majority. This is why Emma from The Promised Neverland does a lot of good. With her short hair, her green eyes and her small size, the girl does not look like much, but her intelligence, her courage and her resourcefulness very quickly make her the leader of the orphans of Grace Field House.

In this apparently normal orphanage, the children have happy days, under the benevolence of their "Mum". But one evening, Emma and other comrades discover the terrible truth, they are only cattle for demons. They have to escape, and they can count on Emma.

Although pre-published in the magazine Weekly Shonen Jump , the temple of shôenen, The Promised Neverland is more of a dark and cruel tale, taking up and diverting the codes of survival , very popular in the manga currently. With already 17 volumes (11 in France at Kazé), an animated series and soon a live film, the title is still in the top 5 of best-selling manga in Japan.

"Beastars" Legoshi

His father, the mangaka Keisuke Itagaki, draws the most barren guys and the most struck fights of the manga in the Baki series. Released Itagaki, she, whose parentage was only revealed after success, prefers to bite into animals: rabbits, mongooses, labradors, deer ... and a gray wolf. The big mean wolf ? This is the whole question of Beastars , where carnivores and herbivores (all anthropomorphic) live in harmony, like the students of the Cherryton school. Consumption of meat prohibited, dormitories separated according to diet ... Everything is done to repress the instinct of carnivores, starting with the hero Beloshi who, behind the cliché of the big bad wolf therefore, hides a sensitive, shy, and clumsy personality .

But the clichés have a hard tooth, and when an alpaca is found shredded, all eyes turn to him. Legoshi decides to carry out the investigation himself, while he develops feelings for Haru, a dwarf rabbit, and as the elections are preparing to appoint the Beastar, the leader of the school.

With the character of Legoshi and the manga Beastars, Paru Itagaki shakes up the little world of the shônen, its heroes and its authors, with an original and inhabited drawing, and a thrilling and deep story about not man but humanity .
