Intensive breeding is no longer popular. In Durmignat (Puy-de-Dôme), a collective of citizens campaign against an industrial pigsty project in the town, reports France Bleu Pays d'Auvergne on Tuesday. The L214 animal defense association joined them in their fight.

This controversial project involves the breeding of 1,008 pigs, distributed in a building of 961 m², or less than one square meter per animal. The height of cynicism, the same day, the Minister of Agriculture detailed a plan of 15 measures to improve animal conditions in the country. Among them, the ban at the end of 2021 on the live castration of piglets.

A risk of soil pollution

Activists in Durmignat find these measures insufficient and denounce an "aberration". "Eating behaviors are changing," says Ghislaine Philippe, spokesperson for the citizens' collective. “People prefer to consume a little less certain products, but have the assurance that these products have been produced in a clean way, with a certain ethics and a respect for the living. "

According to France Bleu, the liquid manure and other pig manure from the farm will be spread on the neighboring town of Echassières (Allier). The citizen collective, which is concerned about the risk of pollution of soil and groundwater, calls on the prefecture to abandon the project. For its part, L214 has posted a petition on its website.

"The animals locked up in intensive breeding live a hell: mutilations, confinement, promiscuity, stress", explains L214, denouncing a project "inadmissible". "Its environmental, health and social consequences would also be disastrous. The final decision is up to the prefect of Puy-de-Dôme, who may or may not grant operating authorization.
