  • Awards: Two successes in the challenge of paying for information

Surrounded by the works of the great masters, the XVIII International Journalism Awards of THE WORLD were delivered last night to the directors of the American The Washington Post , Martin Baron , and the British The Times , John Witherow . The Prado Museum was the scene of the delivery of some awards that gathered around the defense of the best journalism to personalities of politics, economy and culture.

"We owe the public a moral compass and be brave," Baron claimed in his speech in a fantastic Spanish emphasizing that at a time when the press of his country has been attacked by President Trump on numerous occasions, the credibility of Media has grown. The press generates more confidence than the president himself said.

The night was a tribute to the defense of freedom of expression and truth. The media must assume their mistakes, but do not stop fighting for their independence and inform the citizen with rigor, whatever the cost.

The President of the Congress of Deputies, Meritxell Batet, who presented one of the awards, was very blunt in that defense of freedom of expression, which she defined as "the vault key on which journalism is built."

The rest of the participants also shaped their words around this moral barricade of any free society that is the defense of free information, which does not allow any type of relaxation, especially in turbulent times. "The human being has, as far as we know, nearly three millennia fighting for the greatest conquests a person can reach: his dignity and his freedom, and these conquests are impossible without the truth," said the President of the Editorial Unit, Antonio Fernández-Galiano.

The director of EL MUNDO, Francisco Rosell, joined good journalism to democratic health. "A critical, independent and investigative press is the blood of democracy."

Among the attendees were important representatives of the policy. On behalf of the State, the presidents of the Congress and Senate and the spokeswoman María Jesús Montero represented the Government. The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso , the mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida and president of the PP, Pablo Casado , as well as other political forces such as Citizens and Vox also attended.
