Alain Weill at the BFMTV 2019 back-to-school press conference - Paris - 05 09 2019 - Lionel GUERICOLAS / MPP / SIPA

Two public channels France 4 and France Ô, broadcast on DTT, will stop broadcasting on August 9. They will leave behind two empty channels: channel 14 and channel 19. Suffice to say that several channels are already on the job. LCI and Franceinfo - respectively on distant channels 26 and 27 - would like to take the opportunity to get closer to the other news channels, BFMTV (15) and CNews (16).

This idea does not please Alain Weill, the boss of Altice France, who responded to Le Figaro on Sunday on the occasion of the launch of the new L'Express formula, inspired by The Economist . He would lose a big advantage.

"There will be no more chain"

"Why move only the numbering of news channels? On TNT, there are other themes that could also be grouped, he gets annoyed. Thus, we can ask that RMC Découverte, a documentary channel, be brought closer to France 5 and Arte, and M6 could ask that Gulli, a youth channel, take the place of France 4. (…) LCI and Franceinfo are two channels in difficulty who started very late on free DTT, unlike BFMTV and CNews, who bet in 2005 on free information, "he said.

“Their position is therefore a reflection of history. If news channels are grouped together, BFMTV, the only profitable channel, risks losing part of its income and falling into the red. As a result, there will no longer be a profitable chain and the quality of information will be degraded. In the end, it is the CSA which will have to decide this subject ”. Like that, his position is clear.
