How should a nuclear reactor decommission? High school students and others discuss at the symposium Fukushima January 26 22:01

Just nine years after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, a symposium on decommissioning was held in Fukushima Prefecture.

Regarding the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the government and TEPCO say that it will take 30 to 40 years, but no concrete details have been shown yet, such as the shape of the decommissioning and disposal of radioactive waste generated.

A symposium was held on February 26 in Naraha Town, Fukushima Prefecture. He explained how to cover and how to remove the facility after storing it for a longer period to reduce radiation dose.

He pointed out that the cost, duration, amount of radioactive waste generated, etc. will vary, and that "it is important for the residents to participate in the discussion because it is related to the community."

Afterwards, discussions were held with local high school students and others, saying, "The topic of nuclear energy is like a taboo. I want you to open the door to the discussion more." I guess they will lose the word, "he said.

Professor Shunji Matsuoka of Waseda University Graduate School hosted the symposium, stating, "I think it is necessary to provide information to the community and discuss more about what decommissioning is good for Japan and the world."
