Paramount Pictures Studios is preparing a full-length film adaptation of the Broadway musical Mean Girls - a nominee for the prestigious American Tony Award. The performance, in turn, was based on the youth comedy of the same name in 2004 with Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried.

According to foreign media reports, the producers of the musical spoke about the upcoming film adaptation against the backdrop of the upcoming tour of the theater troupe in 2021.

American writer and actress Tina Fey, author of the script for the original Mean Girls, will return to work on the picture. She will rewrite the script and also produce the tape.

“I am very pleased to be able to return the Mean Girls to the big screen again. I am incredibly pleased to see how much this film and musical mean to the audience. For the past 16 years I have not parted with these characters. They are my Marvel universe, and I love them madly, ”Faye quotes Variety.

Among other things, the actress played one of the roles in the 2004 comedy, and later wrote the libretto, on which the musical was subsequently staged. Among the producers of the upcoming film is Lorne Michaels, who also previously worked on the 2004 film.

“It was great to work on Mean Girls and see how the film first turned into a musical, and now the musical becomes a musical film. I’m proud that the story and characters created by Tina resonate with new generations, ”Variety quotes Michaels.

According to the plot of the original comedy, a schoolgirl named Cady Chiron (Lohan) moves with her parents from Africa to Illinois and enters a local comprehensive school. Accustomed to studying at home, Cadey heavily joins the school party, but soon finds friends who are ready to help her adapt. They dedicate the new one to the school hierarchy and talk about the local elite in the person of the so-called “bounties” - the heroines Macadams, Amanda Seyfried and Lacey Shaber.

Cady and her friends come up with a scheme with which the girl could climb the social ladder and overthrow the trinity for a bad attitude to classmates. However, as the plan progresses, Cady forgets about his goals and turns into one of the “bounties”.

Despite the straightforward plot, the picture brilliantly showed itself at the box office. The film’s world box office was almost $ 129 million with a budget of $ 17 million. The tape received the status of a cult youth comedy in the United States, glorifying Seyfried, Macadams and Lizzie Kaplan.

The premiere of the Broadway musical “Mean Girls” took place on October 31, 2017 at the National Theater (Washington), and in April 2018 the show was moved to Broadway. Currently, the musical is being played on the stage of the August Wilson Theater in New York, another composition is touring the United States.

The author of all the musical compositions was Tina Fey's husband, composer Jeff Richmond, and Neil Benjamin wrote the lyrics. In 2018, the production received 12 nominations (including for choreography) for the prestigious Tony Theater Award, but did not receive any awards.

The names of the director and actors of the upcoming film adaptation of the musical from Paramount Pictures have not yet been announced. It is also unclear when work on the film will begin.
