Lazarus, about the life of David Bowie, won most of the prizes on Wednesday evening at the Musical Awards, presented at the RAI in Amsterdam. The show was voted best musical by the jury. Anastasia , also by Albert Verlindes Stage Entertainment, won the audience prize.
Leading character Pieter Embrechts (photo) received a prize for his interpretation of the male main character in Lazarus , the musical directed by Ivo van Hove. He too received a Musical Award for best direction. The fourth Musical Award for Lazarus was awarded to Jan Versweyveld for the best design.
Lazarus , however, was not among the three nominees for the audience award, which could be voted live by viewers during the broadcast. Soldier of Orange, Anastasia and Kinky Boots competed for this honor, which was eventually won by Anastasia .
Renée van Wegberg and Gerrie van der Klei among the prizes
The prize for best female lead role went to Renée van Wegberg for her role in the Fun Home show . This musical was also named the best small production. Fun Home actress Dominique de Bont was named up-and-coming talent on Wednesday.
Gerrie van der Klei and Dennis Willekens won a prize for their supporting roles in Anastasia and Kinky Boots respectively . Soldaat van Oranje was awarded the one-off Musical Award for Unique Performance.
The Musical Awards were presented by Frits Sissing. Prizes were awarded by, among others, Edsilia Rombley, Holly Mae Brood, Richard Groenendijk and Lucas Hamming.
