Jean-Paul Gaultier celebrates 50 years in haute couture this year. A career that started in 1970 at the fashion house Pierre Cardin where he, as an 18-year-old, got a job despite lacking formal education.

His first individual collection was shown in 1976 and in 1983 he created his own fashion house. He has become known for his gender-bending fashion, his perfumes and his iconic garments, not least the pop star Madonna's legendary strut bra.

"I have a new concept, I'll tell you all the little secrets"

But now the 67-year-old fashion creator is retiring from the catwalk, something he announced via a video message on his twitter account.

- Here's a scoop. This will be my last fashion show. The last Gaultier Paris view, the fashion creator said in the message.

He also assured that his fashion house Gaultier Paris will continue.

- I have a new concept. I'll tell you about it later, I'll tell you all the little secrets, he also said in his video message.
