To pay tribute to Jacques Chirac, the Occitanie region has decided to give its name to a high school, necessarily agricultural. The idea was approved on December 13, 2019 in permanent committee and the name of the chosen establishment, which will be the very first Jacques-Chirac high school in France, was announced. It is the agricultural college of La Roque, in Onet-Le-Château, in Aveyron.
Except that in Rouergue, and in the school community of this high school which has a strong reputation, not everyone hears this. Staff from the school launched an online petition five days ago to protest this “unilateral” decision to rename the premises. Already signed by more than 2,100 internet users, she asked that "La Roque lycée keep the name under which it built its reputation".

The text sets out various arguments: "because it slams [the current name] like a slogan" in particular, but also so as not to disintegrate a community which, from generation to generation, is made up of "Laroquois". Staff are also concerned about the recruitment of students, believing that the new name could confuse the cards on Parcoursup.
In a press release published Tuesday, Carole Delga, the socialist president of the Occitania region, wants to be reassuring. "The names of Jacques Chirac and La Roque will be joined," she says. Because if paying homage to this head of state passionate about French terroir and agriculture is obvious, we also have at heart to respect the identity of La Roque high school whose current name is known and recognized. It is an important reference in the guidance wishes that the students will have to make on the Parcoursup platform ”.
