January 18 marks the 195th anniversary of the opening of the modern building of the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. The previous premises were destroyed by fires, and in 1819 the city authorities organized a competition for a stone building project. According to its results, the work of Andrei Mikhailov won, which was commissioned to improve Osip Bova. The new premises exceeded all previous ones, and the theater received the name of Bolshoi Petrovsky. In 1853, the building suffered another serious fire, and then a large-scale reconstruction under the leadership of architect Albert Kavos. After the October Revolution, the Bolshoi was in jeopardy of closure, but still remained the main theater site of the country. In 2005, the historical stage was again closed for reconstruction, which was successfully completed in 2011.
