Singer Floor Jansen won the Popprijs 2019 on Saturday evening. That was announced at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in Groningen.
Jansen has been the singer of the Finnish metal band Nightwish since 2012 and has been a familiar face in the metal scene for decades. She became known to the Dutch public in the past year through her participation in the television program Beste Zangers. According to the jury, Jansen has proven "as one of the best, most versatile singers in the Netherlands."
Jansen himself could not be present at the presentation, but said via a video message that he felt "terribly honored" to receive the prize.
The Popprijs is awarded every year by a jury to a band or artist who has made the most important contribution to Dutch pop music in the past year. The winner receives a cash prize of 10,000 euros and a statue of Theo Mackaay.
Jansen succeeds rapper Ronnie Flex, who received the Pop prize last year. This brings her to the Popprijswinners of Anouk, Tiësto, Kensington and Martin Garrix.
