There have been riots between African and Afghan migrants in and around the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos. The reason is the death of a 20 year old man from Yemen who was stabbed on Thursday evening. The police therefore arrested an Afghan who was 27 years old. As a result, African camp residents protested on Friday about their accommodation and the poor conditions in the camp. They were thrown at by stones by Afghan migrants, as reported by the Greek media.
It is the second violent death of a migrant in Lesbos this year. An Afghan had died on Wednesday who had been the victim of a knife attack on New Year's Eve.
The camps on the islands of Lesbos, Samos, Chios, Kos and Leros are completely overcrowded, the atmosphere is accordingly desperate and tense. According to the Greek Ministry of Civil Protection, almost 42,000 migrants currently live there.
The Greek government announced this week that it would create a Ministry of Migration. In addition, more refugees are to be brought to the mainland and rejected asylum seekers are to be sent back to Turkey more quickly. Another government plan to build closed camps on the islands faces massive opposition from the islanders.
