In November last year, the Cabinet Office conducted a public opinion poll on the death penalty system among 3,000 people aged 18 and over nationwide, and 1572 respondents (52%) responded.

According to the survey, 81% of respondents answered that the death penalty is unavoidable, while 9% said that the death penalty should be abolished.

Of the respondents who answered that "the death penalty is unavoidable," the respondents were asked in multiple answers to find out why "if the abolition is abolished, the feelings of the victims and their families will not subside" is the highest, at 57%. Next, 54% said, "Violent crimes should be compensated with life."

On the other hand, all respondents were asked if they thought the violent crime would or would not increase if the death penalty disappeared, and 58% said that they would increase and 14% would not.

Regarding the abolition of the death penalty system when life imprisonment was introduced, 52% said that "it is better not to abolish the death penalty even if life imprisonment is introduced", and 35% said that "it is better to abolish it."
