Cristopher Tolkien dies, son of the author of the 'Lord of the Rings' devoted to his father's work

Christopher Tolkien, son of the author of the saga The Lord of the Rings, the British writer JRR Tolkien, has died at age 95, the Tolkien Society announced Thursday .

Christopher, third son of the famous author, was responsible for cataloging, editing and publishing numerous works that had been unpublished to the death of his father, in 1973, including the work The Silmarillion.

He also drew many of the maps detailing the fictional world of Middle-earth, where the action of Tolkien's main novels takes place.

"Christopher's commitment to his father's works has allowed dozens of publications to come to light," said Tolkien Society president Shaun Gunner, who also praised his work as an academic at the University of Oxford, where He taught English language between 1964 and 1975.

The writer's son "revealed his father's great vision of a rich and complex mythology" by editing The Silmarilion and "opened a window towards Tolkien's creative process," said Dimitra Fimi, a professor at the University of Glasgow.

The author of the novels, which took a decade to write the six books that make up its three parts (The Community of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King), recounted how, as a child, his son Cristopher supervised with him the parts he wrote and helped him with the drawings of the maps or the design of the runes with which many of the characters in his books write.

According to the scholars of his work, JRR Tolkien, also a professor of literature, wanted to create a kind of great epic work, in the manner of the Song of the Nibelungs, but set in an imaginary world that could somehow transpose to the British Isles.

The Lord of the Rings books were adapted to the cinema in a trilogy signed by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, premiered between 2001 and 2003. In 2012, Christopher Tolkien criticized that adaptation in an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde in which he considered that the movies had "gutted the book" to make it "an action tape."
