"Keep your war away from Iraq." On this sign posted in Baghdad, the message is clear: the Iraqis do not want a new war. However, since the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani by an American military strike, the risk of yet another conflict on Iraqi soil has occupied everyone's mind.

"I'm afraid. If that happens, our life will stop, there will be no more work, no more school," says a young man to France 24.

Kareem Hanash is one of the oldest traders in the Mutanabin Street book market. He has experienced three wars, an embargo and years of terrorism. "The situation is really dangerous today. I hope Iraq will come out of this conflict [between Iran and the United States] because these are political problems, it is not people's fault here, "he breathes.

Since the beginning of October, thousands of Iraqis have been demonstrating in Tharir Square to demand the departure of the current political class and the end of foreign interference. These demonstrators particularly point the finger at the Iraqi armed groups, close to Tehran, who have been calling for revenge since the death of General Soleimani, raising fears of another escalation.
