The “pivotal age” is not unanimous. According to a survey * Ipsos for CNews and Sud Radio, published this Thursday, 61% of the French do not approve the creation of a balance age at 64, at the heart of the debates between the government and the unions on the draft pension reform.

Supporters of this "pivotal age", however, rose two points in one week (39% versus 37%), according to this study.

The protest movement supported

They are on the other hand 66% to support the installation of a universal retirement system putting an end to the special modes, base of the reform proposed by the president Emmanuel Macron on the principle of which the unions are divided. More generally, a majority of French people (54%) support or express sympathy for the mobilization of the main trade union and youth organizations which are leading the strike movement against the reform presented by the government.

This support has been growing steadily since the end of November, when only 46% of French people supported the movement. On the political level, it is particularly strong among the supporters of La France insoumise (82%), the Socialist Party (75%) and the National Rally (65%).

Government will not back down, say French

On the other hand, 64% of the supporters of LREM and 48% of the Republicans (for 40% of supporters) declare themselves opposed or hostile to the movement in progress. By way of comparison, previous movements against pension reform had totaled between 54 and 62% of support in 1995, and 71% in October 2010.

In the end, if a majority of French people (59%) do not want the government to go through with their reform (against 54% on November 26-27), 70% think that the executive will not give in mobilizations and strikes.

* Survey carried out Tuesday and Wednesday by online questionnaires with a sample of 1,013 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
