"The Power of Youth", can be read on the cover, next to the name of Greta Thunberg. The environmental activist was voted personality of the year by the American magazine Time on Wednesday. The 16-year-old Swedish woman, who has become the symbol of the fight against climate change across the planet, is thus the youngest winner of this distinction, awarded since 1927 by the American magazine.

Greta Thunberg, who started in the summer of 2018 to demonstrate alone for the climate every Friday in front of the Swedish Parliament, has since rallied millions of supporters to her cause. They demonstrated their force in September with millions of people on the streets of cities around the world, just before a UN climate summit.

Selected in front of five candidates

During this summit, the teenager had intervened in the forum of the UN with a scathing speech denouncing the inaction of the powerful of the planet vis-a-vis climate change. Regularly cited by among the favorites for the Nobel Peace Prize, it was ultimately not retained.

Greta Thunberg, who was in recent days at the climate conference in Madrid, was selected by Time in front of five other finalists: Donald Trump, the leader of the Democrats in the United States Congress; Nancy Pelosi; US women's football team star Megan Rapinoe; the CIA agent who warned of the phone call between Donald Trump and the President of Ukraine, who initiated proceedings to remove the president; and Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters.
