Named the museum “Murakami Pirate Museum” From April next year, Ehime December 20, 15:18

The name of the “Murakami Navy Museum” in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture, which displays materials from the Murakami family who played an active part in the Seto Inland Sea, mainly from the Sengoku period, will be changed to “Murakami Pirate Museum” from April next year.

The “Murakami Suigun Museum” is a facility that was established in 2004 in Oshima, Imabari City, and exhibits about 450 materials related to the Murakami family that ruled the entire Seto Inland Sea mainly during the Sengoku period.

Imabari City decided to change the name of this museum to “Murakami Pirate Museum” from April of next year, and the 19th city council passed a revised bill for related regulations.

The reason for this is that in Imabari City, the word `` pirate '' was used for a long time before the `` water army '', and the Murakami family played a wide range of roles such as ensuring the security of the sea, logistics, and transportation. It is said that it is academically correct to use "pirates" rather than "naval forces".

In addition, the historical novel “Murakami Pirate's Daughter” based on the Murakami family became the best seller, and the term “Murakami Pirate” became widely known to the general public.

Mr. Ken Tanaka, curator of the Murakami Suigun Museum, says, “The contents of the exhibition will not change even if the name changes, so we want many people to know the history of Japan's largest pirate, Murakami Pirates.”
