• Criticism: Pain and glory: the perfect movie fever

Pedro Almodóvar's film 'Pain and Glory' has been shortlisted by the Hollywood Academy of Arts and Sciences to compete for the Oscar for best international film , entering the so-called 'shortlist'.

The nominees will meet the other nominations in January , after the Golden Globes, and the winners will be announced during the 92nd edition of the Oscars, which will be delivered on February 9, 2020.

This is the third time that a film directed by the Manchego filmmaker opts for the category of Best non-English speaking film, an award he won in 1999 for 'All About My Mother' and for which he was a candidate in 1988 with 'Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown . '

In addition, Almodóvar was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2002 for 'Talk to her' , a film for which he was also an Oscar nominee for Best Director. 'Champions' , directed by Javier Fesser, was chosen to represent Spain in the last edition of the Oscars, although he finally failed to sneak into the favorites of the Hollywood Academy.

To date, only four Spanish films have won the award in the category of 'Best Non-English Speaking Film': 'Start over' , by José Luis Garci; 'Belle Époque' , by Fernando Trueba; 'All about my mother' , by Pedro Almodóvar; and 'Mar in' , by Alejandro Amenábar, which was also the last Spanish film that opted for the Oscar in this category.

Pedro Almodóvar's film has passed this first three along with nine other films , including 'Los miserables' (France), by director Ladj Ly; 'Parasite' (South Korea), by director Bong Joon-ho; 'The Painted Bird' (Czech Republic), by director Václav Marhoul; or 'Truth and Justice' (Estonia), by Tanel Toom.

They complete the list 'Those Who Remained' - 'Those who remained' - (Hungary), by Barnabás Tóth; 'Honeyland' (North Macedonia), by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov; 'Corpus Christi' (Poland), by Jan Komasa; 'Beneapole' - 'A great woman' - (Russia), by Kantemir Balagov; and 'Atlantics' (Senegal), by Mati Diop.
