Following the announcement that they were nominated for the award, the four - who had not then met - wrote a joint letter to the jury asking them to share the award in a spirit of solidarity, at a time when Britain and much of the world is fragmented.

"We have very strong individual voices, but somehow the prize needed to be dealt with in this way," says Oscar Murillo, who was pre-drafted as the winner.

The Turner Prize was established in 1984 and is directed by the Tate Britain Art Museum and is the UK's most prestigious award for contemporary artists. Previous winners include Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst and Steve McQueen.
