The famous Latvian orchestra conductor Mariss Jansons, 76, has died at his home in St. Petersburg, as confirmed by the Vienna Philharmonic.

Jansons (Riga, 1943) had been away from the scenes for a heart condition.

He directed the Vienna New Year's Concert in 2016, 2012 and 2006.

"Sincere gratitude for his great art that will always remain in us," said St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov in a statement. Mariss Jansons was an "outstanding director," he added.
