For the first time in the history of the Golden Televizier Ring, from next year Netflix productions and programs and series of other video on demand platforms can also compete for the prize. The organization will announce this on Monday.

"Netflix, Videoland, NPO Start and Kijk are indispensable in the lives of many viewers. Bingewatching has become a household name and some fans barely leave their favorite video app," the organization said in a press release.

The titles that want to have a chance to win the most important television prize in the Netherlands must meet a number of requirements: "First, they must be programs and series of Dutch origin that are available on video-on-demand (VOD) platforms accessible throughout the Netherlands , as mentioned above. There may be co-productions with other countries, if at least half of the spoken language is Dutch (or Frisian). "

Television programs that want to win a Golden Televizier Ring must have attracted more than 475,000 viewers. However, most online streaming services do not share the number of viewers publicly. That is why the organization wants to use a jury that must determine whether a specific VOD production is qualitative and popular enough to appear on the shortlist.

Qualification already started

Although the Golden Televizier Ring Gala will only take place in the autumn of 2020, the first qualifying round has already started. VOD productions can also be voted on.

Dutch VOD productions have been on the rise in recent years. For example, Videoland produced the popular Mocro Mafia series and the American streaming service Netlifx is also going to co-produce a feature film in the Dutch-language series Undercover , in which some Dutch is spoken.

The already announced movie Battle of the Scheldt revolves around the military operation Battle of the Scheldt and will be screened in November 2020, 75 years after the liberation of the Netherlands.
