The frivolity with which the Government of Sánchez deals with democratic institutions yesterday had a new episode in Cuba, which unnecessarily erodes the international image of the Spanish Monarchy. Having come to the island on a state trip -the highest diplomatic rank-, Don Felipe, with the prior consent of the Government, had to accept an off-schedule meeting with the dictator Raúl Castro , upset by the impeccable speech of the monarch on the day previous in defense of democracy and human rights. Castro, 88, took the opportunity and forced a private meeting with the King that reinforces his authority and sends an unequivocal message: the power is still in his hands and does not intend to yield it to the internal opposition, which is still undergoing imprisonment and torture.

It is true that the more than 250 Spanish companies that operate on the island are not at their best. The measures promoted by Trump, reactivating the Helms-Burton law, and the debt that the regime has with them - some 350 million - place them in a situation of weakness. But the Government - which planned the trip in functions - should have avoided an image that harms Spain and sends a discouraging message to the opponents.
