It is an organ that remains taboo in many men, and that worries because of the risk of disease, 60,000 people are each year suffering from cancer. However, there are ways to take care of this gland, and thus reduce the risk of cancer or adenoma. Adenoma and cancer, what to know about these disorders?

"The median age of men treated for adenoma problems is 63," said François Desgrandchamps, who said however that from age 50, "all prostates grow," and that the adenoma is so very frequent. "For a senior, it's almost unnatural to have a normal prostate," he says again.

But if the causes of this aging prostate remain unknown, some of the factors favoring it are identified. First factor: sedentary lifestyle, which often leads to weight gain in humans.

"There is a link between waist circumference and the size of the prostate", confirms the surgeon-urologist, the substances secreted by the fat may be at the origin of this increase in size.

The main sign of an adenoma is a frequent urge to urinate, especially at night. "From twice a night, we can say that this is not normal," explains François Desgrandchamps.

Prostate cancer kills nearly 8,000 men a year, while nearly 60,000 new cases occur each year. "We heal a lot," says the specialist, recalling that many "do not need to be treated." Between "one-third and half do not need to be treated," he says again, because "a non-aggressive cancer is not equipped to metastasize and therefore to kill".

How to prevent risks?

Regarding the adenoma, François Desgrandchamps advises regular physical activity, even low, for example by walking a little more to get to his place of work. "Physical activity reduces the risk of prostate adenoma by a quarter," he says, also recommending not spending too much time in front of the television. "Ten hours a week is twice as many adenoma operations," he says.

For cancer, "it's mostly at the plate that it happens," notes François Desgrandchamps. The doctor therefore recommends reducing its consumption of "saturated fats of animal origin such as red meat, butter, cheese". However, it is advisable to increase fruits and vegetables, including tomato and its antioxidant properties, broccoli and pomegranate.

Finally, sexual activity, alone or as a couple, is highly recommended. "More than 20 ejaculations a month, it halves the risk of cancer," says the urologist.
